Flows of food

Flows of Food is an international conference targeting the foundation of a food council . It opens a unique opportunity to gain inspiration and knowledge about city regional food systems. The event pivots around one of the leading thinkers about food policy, Wayne Roberts. He is the former director of the Toronto Food Policy Council. His slogan,"Food is the lever", shows food, not as a problem, but an opportunity. Touching on issues such as overweight, unhealthy eating patterns, depletion of the soil, water retention, traffic congestions, unemployment, circular economy, climate change and pollution.

Flows of Food is a kick-off event celebrating the establishment of Food Council MRA (Metropolitan Region of Amsterdam). Flows of Food assembles forerunners, innovators, change agents and dreamers from all sectors of the regional food chain. This includes but is not limited to, entrepreneurs, governments, education and research institutes, media, students and NGO’s, i.e. organisations and individuals who are driven by a common sense of urgency and passion to make better use of the inherent opportunities of which the metropolitan food system can offer..

Flows of Food above all is an opportunity for connecting with familiar and unfamiliar parties involved in the regional food systems.

During the event Food Council MRA will be established. The council reflects an organically grown network of participants from the private sector, governments, civic initiatives and education institutes. What binds this network is a shared conviction that food is a lever in the process of transition towards a more sustainable, healthy and just society, with a high quality of life.

Flows of Food is just a beginning. It is the first annual meeting that brings the regional community together. This annual event creates an opportunity for the celebration of successes and the articulation of subsequent questions.

Flows of Foods focuses in on seven core issues. These issues are framing devices and pointers in need of further articulation and are open for amendments and / or further additions. They are not in any way intended to represent an exhaustive list!
